CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball opened the New Year on a good note as four players scored in double figures tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center as it posted an 85-54 win over visiting Trinity International.
The Cougars improved their season record to 2-14, while the Lady Trojans fell to 6-9 on the year.
CSU opened the game with an early 10-3 lead within the first five minutes of the game following a jumper from junior Caneka Davis (Chicago, Ill./Walther Lutheran) (Chicago, Ill.), but the visitors came back with a 15-9 scoring drive in the next five minutes to slice its deficit to 19-18 at the 10:05 mark after junior Monty Washington canned a jumper. The Green and White finished the stanza scoring 26 of the final 54 points in 10 minutes to head into intermission with a 45-36 lead.
A 16-5 scoring drive over a ten-minute span to increase its leading margin to 23 points at 64-41 at the 10:15 mark of the second half with freshman Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) (St. Louis, Mo.) scoring eight points during that stretch. The Lady Trojans would get no closer than 24 points the rest of the way.
Williams recorded a game-leading 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, while senior Janay Dockery (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) recorded a double-double with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in addition to a game-high seven steals.
Freshman Jasmine Collins (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) (Richton Park, Ill.) posted a pair of season highs of 13 points and nine rebounds, freshman Chanel Wilson-Stewart (Hillside, Ill./St. Joseph's) (Hillside, Ill.) recorded a season-best 12 rebounds and eight points, and freshman Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) (Southfield, Mich.) tallied 11 points.
Junior Cassie Glendenning paced Trinity International with 10 points, while Washington and sophomore Clarissa Woodard added nine points and 10 rebounds, respectively.
CSU travels west on Jan. 14 at Seattle beginning at 6 p.m., central time, to begin a three-game road swing.
