EDINBURG, Texas – Chicago State women's basketball kicked off Great West Conference play here tonight as it fell to host Texas-Pan American in a close battle by a score of 43-39 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs improved their record to 8-11 (1-0) while the Cougars dropped to 2-16 (0-1) on the year.
The visitors opened the game with an 8-0 lead in the game's opening four minutes and led at the half by a score of 19-15, but UTPA outscored the Cougars by a 28-20 margin in the second half to claim the win.
CSU was ahead by a score of 37-34 at the 3:25 mark of regulation following a three-pointer from senior Janay Dockery (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) then the home team scored four of the final six points down the stretch for the win.
Senior Janay Dockery (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) led CSU with 18 points, while freshman Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) added five rebounds and five assists. Freshman Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) (St. Louis, Mo.) also recorded six points and five boards for the Green and White.
UTPA was junior Bianca Torre's game-leading 21 points, while seniors Adanna Opara and Donna Jackson each tallied a game-high nine rebounds.
CSU concludes its three-game road swing this Saturday night with a Great West game at Houston Baptist beginning at 7 p.m.
