Women’s Basketball Beats NJIT, 69-51, in Season Finale

Courtney Waldon scored a career-best 24 points in CSU's season finale against NJIT

CHICAGO – Junior Courtney Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Chicago State women's basketball team past visiting NJIT, 69-51, in its regular season and Great West Conference finale Saturday afternoon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.

The Cougars improved their season record to 12-18 (7-5) while the Highlanders dropped to 11-16 (6-5) on the year.

Waldon connected on 8-of-13 shooting from the field that included going 7-of-10 from three-point range on the day. Junior Tressa Beckel (Waseca, Minn./Wisconsin) (Waseca, Minn.) nearly tallied a double-double as she recorded season highs of 20 points and nine rebounds with two blocked shots, while sophomore Janay Dockery (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.

In her final collegiate home game, senior Alyssa Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) posted game highs of seven assists and three steals for the Cougars.

NJIT was led by junior Jessica Gerald's 19 points on the day. Sophomore Melanie Griffin added nine points, while junior Ivana Seric tallied five assists and senior Katie Piekielski recorded three steals.

Following the game, seniors Alyssa Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie), Sarah Black (Fairfax, IA/Xavier) (Fairfax, Iowa), Nicole Clark (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Laureen Pierson (Dayton, OH/Northmont) (Dayton, Ohio) were honored in a senior day ceremony.

Next Up for CSU is the 2010 Great West Conference Tournament which begins on Thursday, March 11 in Orem, Utah. The seeding for the tournament will be known after tomorrow's NJIT-South Dakota game from Vermillion, S.D. at 6 p.m.
