Women’s Basketball Captures 77-49 Great West Conference Home Win over Houston Baptist

Tressa Backel scored a season-best 18 points Thursday night against Houston Baptist

CHICAGO – Junior Tressa Beckel (Waseca, Minn./Wisconsin) (Waseca, Minn.) tallied a game-high 18 points to lead four Chicago State players in double figures as it captured a commanding 77-49 victory over visiting Houston Baptist in Great West Conference play tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.

The Cougars improved to 9-14 (4-2) with the win, while the Huskies dropped their season record to 3-17.

Beckel finished the game shooting 7-of-8 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line in just 14 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Janay Dockery (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) recorded a career-high 14 points and added five assists, while junior Caila Desroches (Long Island, NY/Monroe CC) (Long Island, N.Y.) posted a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in addition to tying junior Elana Wroten (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) (Chicago, Ill.) with three blocks. Senior Alyssa Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) rounded out the quartet with 11 points and a game-leading four steals.

HBU was led by sophomore Racquel Jones as she tied with Beckel for game high scoring honors with 18 points. Sophomore Tamiqua Hollis along with freshmen Princess Jeanmard, Brittany Maxey and Brittany Barton each added five points for the Huskies. Junior Shirolacille Holloway paced the team in rebounding with seven on the night.

CSU closes its three-game homestand this Saturday with a Great West battle against Texas-Pan American beginning at 2 p.m. The game will serve as the Homecoming game for the Cougars along with it being their annual WBCA Pink Zone game. All fans attending the game are encouraged to wear pink shirts.
