CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball (11-8) dropped the second game of its three-game road trip Saturday night with a 55-49 defeat at Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Texas. The Cougars saw their season ledger fall to 11-10, while the Lady Broncs improved to 12-11.
UTPA broke a 10-all tie over the first 8:11 of the game by using a 12-3 scoring drive over eight minutes, led by junior Teshay Winfrey's 11 points, to claim a 22-13 advantage with 3:21 left in the stanza following a Winfrey three-pointer.
CSU responded with a 12-1 run in the final three minutes behind six points from sophomore Courtney Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and five points from freshman Jael Peña (Harlem, N.Y.) to capture a 25-23 lead entering halftime.
The Lady Broncs scored six of the first eight points of the second half to claim a slim 29-27 advantage after a Winfrey jumper at 15:25. A jumper from senior Jasmin Dixon (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) at the 13:23 mark started a quick 7-2 run over a stretch of 4:12 to post its biggest lead of the game at 36-31 with 9:11 left in the game.
The home team closed the game with a 24-13 scoring run over the final nine minutes with 10 points coming from junior Robin Garrett to provide the final margin.
Waldon posted a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds to lead Chicago State, while Peña added eight points. Sophomore Elana Wroten (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) (Chicago, Ill.) finished with six points and four rebounds on the night. Freshman Natalie Marlowe (South Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) (South Milwaukee, Wis.) recorded a career-high six assists for the Cougars.
Winfrey and Garrett led UTPA's offensive effort by scoring 19 and 18 points, respectively, while both players recorded six rebounds. Freshman Brittany Demery produced eight points and seven caroms, while fellow classmate Epiphany Smith added four assists and two steals for the Lady Broncs.
CSU closes its road swing on Saturday, Feb. 7 at NJIT with the tip-off set for 3 p.m.
