COLUMBIA, Mo. – Chicago State women's basketball had its three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night after suffering a 63-42 loss to host Missouri at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers improved to 9-4 on the year and the Cougars fell to 8-8 this season.
Missouri opened the game with 22 unanswered points in the game's opening 7:15, led by sophomore Jessra Johnson's seven points. The visitors got on the board at 11:50 with a pair of free throws from junior Laureen Pierson (Dayton, OH/Northmont) (Dayton, Ohio) and later used a 10-6 scoring drive over eight minutes to close within 31-15 after senior Jasmin Dixon (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.), who scored seven points during the run, canned a jumper at 1:53. The home team posted a quick 6-2 run in the final minute to enter halftime ahead by a 38-17 leading margin.
The Cougars scored five of the first nine points of the second half to close their deficit to 40-22 which culminated with a three-pointer from freshman Janay Dockery (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) at the 17:58 mark, but Missouri produced a 15-8 scoring drive in nearly eight minutes to claim its biggest lead of the game at 55-27 after a three by junior Amanda Hanneman. CSU could get no closer than 19 points the rest of the way.
Sophomore Courtney Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) led Chicago State with 16 points, while Dixon recorded a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds with three assists. Sophomore Elana Wroten (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) (Chicago, Ill.) added seven points for the Cougars.
Johnson recorded game highs 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting and three blocked shots to lead Missouri. Sophomore Shakara Jones added 13 points and three assists, while sophomore RaeShara Brown posted seven rebounds and redshirt freshman Bekah Mills posted a game-high four steals.
Chicago State heads back to the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center to open a three-game homestand beginning Saturday afternoon against North Carolina Central with a start time of 2 p.m.
