CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Dec. 10, 2008) – Chicago State men's basketball continued its six-game road swing Wednesday night with an 89-50 loss to host Illinois at Assembly Hall in Champaign, Ill. The Fighting Illini improved to 9-1 with the win, while the Cougars fell to 3-5 on the year.
CSU, which trailed 41-26 at halftime, bounced back early in the second half by scoring 12 of the stanza's first 18 points to close within 47-38 with 13:59 remaining in the game. Illinois then went on a 22-2 scoring drive over six minutes to increase its leading margin to 69-40 at the 6:52 mark and never looked back.
Senior David Holston (Pontiac, MI/Avondale HS) (Pontiac, Mich.) scored 17 points, including five three-pointers, to lead the Cougars, while senior Tawrence Walton (Chicago, IL/Kennedy-King College) (Chicago, Ill.) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Senior Mike Wilson (New York, NY/Mt. San Jacinto CC) (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Carl Montgomery (Chicago, IL/Shepard) (Palos Heights, Ill.) added seven caroms apiece.
Illinois was led by sophomore Mike Tisdale's double-double of a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two blocks. Sophomore Mike Davis also recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 boards, while senior Trent Meacham added 14 points and senior Chester Frazier posted six assists.
Chicago State travels west to Honolulu for a first-time meeting against Hawai'i on Monday, Dec. 15 with the tip-off set for 11 p.m., central time.
