Matthew Muhammad

Chicago native and coaching veteran Matthew Muhammad enters his second season with Chicago State as an assistant coach. Muhammad returned to CSU with a wealth of experience at various levels of basketball which included serving as a head boys basketball coach at the high school level at Manley and Collins High Schools on the city’s West Side.

During his tenure at Manley, Muhammad posted a 26-20 record in two seasons with the Wildcats. He also posted a 96-69 ledger in six seasons at Collins. His best year at the school came during the 2001-02 season when he guided the Cobras to a 22-2 record and the Public League Blue-West section title in addition to attaining an Associated Press Class AA state ranking of 11th. For his efforts, Muhammad was named Public League Blue-West Coach of the Year.

Muhammad served two seasons as the head men’s basketball coach and three seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Malcolm X College. Before heading to Malcolm X, he was an assistant coach at Olive-Harvey during the 1987-88 season under James Traywick and served as an assistant under the late Willie Little at Illinois-Chicago for the 1986-87 season.

Muhammad worked as a graduate assistant coach at CSU from 1984-86 under head coach Bob Hallberg and began his coaching career as a student assistant coach under Ed Weinbach at Panhandle State in 1983-84.

Muhammad received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in accounting from Panhandle State in 1984 and earned his Master’s degree in physical education from Chicago State in 1993. He served for 12 years as a coach in the City-Suburban All-Star game in addition to working camps for former Chicago Bulls players Michael Jordan (1992) and B.J. Armstrong (1993). Muhammad and his wife Katie have a 15-year-old daughter Kamaria and they reside in Chicago.
