James Farr

The 2013-14 season will be the fourth for James Farr as the associate head coach for the Chicago State men’s basketball team and his seventh overall with the program after previously served as an assistant coach for three seasons.

The Chicago native mainly works with the team’s guards and game preparation. He has brought in several top players from the Chicagoland area to CSU during his tenure.
 
Farr returned to the Cougars after spending several seasons as an assistant coach at Simeon High School on the city’s South Side. He helped the Wolverines capture back-to-back Chicago Public League and IHSA Class AA state championships in addition to attaining a final USA Today national ranking of sixth after the 2006-07 season. Among the players he coached at Simeon included two-time First team All-State selection Tim Flowers and Derrick Rose, the No. 1 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls.
 
No stranger to the Chicago collegiate basketball scene, Farr spent three seasons as an assistant at Loyola University Chicago under Larry Farmer. During his tenure at Loyola, he helped tutor former Westinghouse High School guard David Bailey, who earned All-Horizon League honors during his career and guided the Ramblers to the 2002 Horizon League Tournament championship game.
 
Farr previously served as an assistant coach at CSU under Bo Ellis from 1998-01. He helped several players earn All-Mid-Continent Conference (now Summit League) accolades during his tenure, including Second Team honorees Jermaine Hicks in 1999 and Tony Jones in 2001. In addition, Farr recruited former Westinghouse High School standout Craig Franklin, who earned Second Team All-Mid Con honors in 2003-04.
 
Before heading to CSU, Farr spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Morehead State in Kentucky and coached at Chicago’s Hales Franciscan High School for a year. He began his coaching career as a student assistant coach under Tony Barone at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.
 
Farr played at Creighton for two seasons while averaging 12 points and six assists per game during that time. He helped the Bluejays win the Missouri Valley Conference championship in 1988-89 and earned First Team All-MVC accolades that season. Farr played at Northwest Junior College in Wyoming for two seasons, where he captured Second Team NJCAA All-America honors as a sophomore, before transferring to Creighton.
 
An Illinois high school basketball legend, Farr helped Chicago’s Mount Carmel High School win the 1985 IHSA Class AA state championship which included him recording 30 points and five steals in a 46-44 win over Springfield Lanphier High School in the championship game. He captured All-Tournament honors after averaging 17.8 points, 4.8 assists and 3.3 steals per game in the state finals.
 
Farr earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Creighton in 1989. He currently resides in the Chicago area, and has three children in daughter Ashley and twin sons Juwan and Dejuan.
