Dexter Young returns to Chicago State University as special assistant to the head coach for the 2013-2014 season. Young rejoins CSU after spending one year as assistant coach and head recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division II Fresno Pacific University where he helped lead Fresno Pacific University to a 21-9 record in their first year in Division II after transitioning from the NAIA.

His high profile 2012-13 recruiting class, including two Division I transfers and National Junior College Player of the Year, led the Sunbirds the program’s first ever undefeated home record (13-0). Fresno Pacific won the NCCAA West-Region Championship and earned a spot in the NCCAA Final Four after picking up the NCCAA tournament overall No. 1 seed. The Sunbirds finished second in the NCAA Division II PacWest Conference after being predicted to finish eighth in the preseason poll. In addition significant team accomplishments, Young’s recruits also earned numerous individual accolades:

• John Taylor, the 2012 National Junior College Player of the Year and national champion at Mott JC, was named 2013 PacWest Newcomer of the Year and selected to the All-PacWest First Team. He was the nation’s scoring leader (27.5), NCCAA Player of the Year Runner-up, NCCAA 1st Team All-American, NCCAA West-Region Player of the Year and NCCAA First-Team All-Tournament. He set school and conference records for single season scoring (825 points) and points in single game (50 pts).

• Malcolm Griffin, a Division I transfer from Toledo led the team in points, assists, & steals in 2011. He earned All-PacWest First Team and NCCAA Second Team All-American honors. He recorded two triple-doubles and one near quadruple double. He led PacWest in assists (6.2 per game).

• Matt Samuels, a Division I transfer from Chicago State University finished in the top 15 in the PacWest in scoring, assists and steals.

Prior to his time at FPU, Young spent two seasons as the Director of Player Personnel and student assistant coach at Chicago State University.

Previously, Young served as an assistant varsity coach and head freshman coach at Hyde Park Academy in Chicago during the 2009-10 season. While at Hyde Park, he helped the Thunderbirds capture the Chicago Public League Red-Central title while advancing to the semifinals of the Public League Championship Tournament.

In high school he played basketball for legendary Chicago prep coach Bob Hambric at Simeon Career Academy, where he guided the Wolverines to a Public League Championship semifinal appearance and garnered Public League All-Red South honors as a sophomore while being named the top-rated point guard in the state as a junior. He moved to Fresno, Calif. his senior season and starred locally for Bullard High School.

From Fresno, Young went on to earn All-America honors at Porterville Junior College, NCAA Division II (Angelo State University) and NAIA Division I (Point Park University) levels.
After college Young continued his career professionally, competing in semi-pro and professional basketball leagues throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S. from 2001-09. Young had stints in the CBA, as well as overseas in Slovakia, Austria and China.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Recreation from Chicago State, graduating Cum Laude. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Kinesiology from Fresno Pacific University.
