CHICAGO, IL. — Chicago State women's soccer earned a 1-0 victory over Delaware State on Sunday at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep, securing its first conference win of the season behind a strong defensive performance and a first-half goal from Alyssa Owens.
The Cougars (1-8-0, 1-1-0) scored the game's only goal in the first half when Owens found the back of the net on her only shot of the match. The goal marked Owens' second point of the season and gave Chicago State the lead heading into halftime.
Chicago State's defense and goalkeeping held strong throughout the second half, keeping Delaware State (1-6-0, 0-2-0) off the scoreboard. The Hornets recorded two shots on goal, but Sierra Sonko turned both attempts away to preserve the shutout. Sonko played all 90 minutes in goal and finished the match with two saves.
Stephanie Vazquez Ceron and Jennifer Vasquez each recorded an assist for the Cougars, helping create the scoring opportunity that ultimately gave Chicago State the lead.
The Cougars continued to control the defensive side of the match in the second half, limiting Delaware State's opportunities and securing the 1-0 result for their first conference victory of the season.
Chicago State will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27, when the Cougars travel to New Britain, Connecticut, to face Central Connecticut State University at 1 p.m. at CCSU Soccer Field.
