BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Chicago State football earned the first victory in program history Saturday, defeating Kentucky Christian 78-7 at SeatGeek Stadium.

The Cougars (1-2) scored 57 unanswered points after holding a 21-7 advantage, pulling away behind an offense that produced 580 total yards and a defense that forced four turnovers. Chicago State threw for 406 yards and four touchdowns while adding 174 rushing yards and five scores.

"This is a special moment for our program," Head Coach Bobby Rome II said. "These young men came to Chicago State knowing that we were building something from the ground up, and now they can say they were part of the first win in program history. I'm proud of the way we played together in all three phases, but more importantly, I'm proud of the work these guys have continued to put in. This is one win, and we still have a lot of work ahead of us, but nobody can ever take this moment away from this team."

Chicago State set the tone immediately, outgaining Kentucky Christian 152-62 in the opening quarter while scoring touchdowns on each of its first three possessions.

Quarterback Ashton Pannell connected with Kymari Gray for an 18-yard touchdown to open the scoring before Tre' Hartwell and Chris Edmonds added rushing touchdowns. Jayden Earley recorded his first interception of the afternoon to help set up a four-play, 66-yard scoring drive as CSU ended the first quarter with a 21-0 advantage.

The Cougars continued to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring Kentucky Christian 28-7. Chicago State converted all four of its third-down opportunities and finished each of its three red-zone trips with touchdowns.

Pannell completed 12 of 13 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns during the quarter, while the defense held Kentucky Christian to minus-19 rushing yards and recorded four tackles for loss and two sacks.

Earley provided one of the biggest defensive plays of the afternoon with an interception return for a touchdown. Later, DeJuan Harris recorded a sack-fumble that was recovered by Breylon Wyatt, setting up a two-play, 35-yard CSU touchdown drive.

Kentucky Christian got on the scoreboard when Xavier Phillips connected with Jalen Briscoe for an 18-yard touchdown, but Chicago State entered halftime with a commanding 49-7 lead.

The Cougars added seven points in the third quarter behind a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Edmonds scoring from one yard out. Donovan Blair converted the extra point to extend Chicago State's advantage to 56-7.

Chicago State controlled the ball for 9:51 in the third quarter and produced 125 yards of offense while keeping Kentucky Christian off the scoreboard.

The Cougars closed the afternoon by scoring 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Chicago State recorded a safety before Lesroy Tittle returned an interception for a touchdown. The offense added two one-play touchdown drives to complete the 78-7 victory.

Pannell finished an efficient 22-of-25 passing for 308 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.

"It feels great to be part of the first win in program history," Pannell said. "Offensively, everybody contributed today. The offensive line gave us time, the receivers made plays, the running backs produced and we were able to execute what the coaches put together for us. For me, it was just about getting the ball to our playmakers and taking what the defense gave us. This is something we can enjoy tonight, but we know we have to get back to work and prepare for Butler."

Edmonds finished with 52 rushing yards and three touchdowns on nine carries while adding two receptions for 24 yards and another score. Gray led the receiving corps with seven catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Earley finished with four tackles and two interceptions, including his interception return for a touchdown. As a unit, the Cougars recorded three interceptions, one fumble recovery, three sacks and a safety.

The victory gives Chicago State its first football win during the program's inaugural season and adds another milestone to the return of football to the university.
