CHICAGO, Ill. -  In a historic moment, Chicago State opened its inaugural season but fell to Roosevelt (1-0) with a final score of 44–28 on Saturday at SeatGeek Stadium. The Cougars maintained a balanced attack with 387 total offensive yards but could not overcome Roosevelt's strong second-quarter performance.
 
Roosevelt opened the first quarter with a methodical drive, consuming over seven minutes, resulting in a 24-yard field goal by Sean Sample to take the initial lead. CSU responded with a swift drive highlighted by a 12-yard pass from Ashton Pannell to Develle Barksdale, followed by a five-yard touchdown run from Michael Dabney Jr., aided by a roughing the passer penalty, to secure a 7–3 lead. The Cougars' defense held firm, recording two tackles for loss, and the team finished the quarter ahead 7–3.
 
Roosevelt capitalized on key turnovers and penalty issues from the Cougars to extend its lead during the second quarter. Tony Chahino found Jaden Bossie for a 19-yard touchdown early in the period and later connected with Dylan Hendee on a five-yard score, contributing to Roosevelt's efficient 112 passing yards in the quarter. Conversely, CSU struggled with a critical interception returned for a touchdown by Keron Pryor, while penalties, including a costly personal foul, hindered its momentum. As the half concluded, Roosevelt held a 27–14 advantage.
 
Roosevelt extended its lead in the third quarter, capitalizing on a 54-yard touchdown run by Jaden Bossie at 11:59, followed by a successful field goal, which contributed to a 10-point quarter. Chicago State responded with a late touchdown at 1:52, as Pannell connected with Mark Harris for a 14-yard score, tightening the scoreline to 37–21 by the end of the period. Despite controlling the possession for nearly 10 minutes and accumulating 45 rushing yards, the Cougars were hindered by a critical lost fumble that led to Roosevelt's field goal.
 
Roosevelt capitalized on a turnover early in the fourth quarter when Derek Whaley intercepted a pass at the CSU 34-yard line, setting up a 27-yard touchdown pass from Chahino to CJ Hood, extending its lead. The Cougars responded with a determined drive late in the period, highlighted by Pannell's 38-yard completion to Kaymen Coleman, culminating in a touchdown pass to Arshawn Powell. Despite outgaining Roosevelt 88 yards to 27 through the air in the quarter, the Cougars trailed 44–28 as the game concluded.
 
Pannell led the offensive charge with 264 passing yards, completing 29 of 40 attempts, and threw three touchdowns. Kymari Gray contributed with a touchdown reception, amassing 39 yards on two catches. On the ground, Dabney Jr. found the end zone, scoring once on his three carries for 10 rushing yards. Defensively, Armani Itote was a standout performer, recording 11 total tackles.
 
Looking ahead, CSU will face UT Martin on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. in Martin, Tennessee.
