NEC Rookie of the Week featuring Makiyah Brewton

Makiyah Brewton Named NEC Women's Rookie of the Week; Thornton and Cleveland Named NEC Prime Performers

CHICAGO, Ill. - The NEC has announced their weekly award winners for women's track and field for week of April 22. Freshman Makiyah Brewton was named NEC Rookie of the Week. Joining her were teammates Katherine Thornton and Lena Cleveland who were named as Prime Performers for their performances. 

Makiyah Brewton (Douglas, Georgia) was named Women's Rookie of the Week after she competed in the long jump invite event at the Gibson Invitational at Indiana State University where nine featured athletes competed against each other in an invite only setting. After leaping 6.00m at the Tennessee Invite on April 11, Brewton leaped 5.66m at the Gibson Invite to finish fifth in the long jump invite event. The NEC long jump leader now has three marks this outdoor season at 5.60m or better. 

Katherine Thornton (Reno Nevada) was named as a Prime Performer for the second straight week after setting another personal best in the 100 meter hurdles at the Gibson Invite. She ran a 14.13 to finish seventh in the event. She beat her previous best of 14.18 which she ran at the Tennessee Invite on April 11. This is Thornton's fourth prime performer award of the season and her third of the outdoor season. 

Lena Cleveland (Southfield, Michigan) was named Prime Performer after competing in the long jump invite at the Gibson Invitational on April 18. Cleveland leaped 5.66m finishing 4th overall for an outdoor season best. This is Cleveland's first Prime Performer of the outdoor season and her fourth overall in the season. 

Makiyah Brewton, Katherine Thornton, and Lena Cleveland will lead the Chicago State women's track and field team at the 116th annual Drake Relays at Drake Stadium from Des Moines, Iowa. The Cougars are set to compete on April 24 and April 25 of the Relays. Brewton will compete in both the long jump, triple jump, and run the first leg of the 4x100m Relay. Thornton will run in the 100 meter hurdles, and the first leg of the 4x200m Relay. Cleveland will compete in both the long jump and triple jump.
