Cougars Show Resilience in Narrow Defeat to Blue Devils

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Chicago State (3-20, 1-9 NEC) fell to Central Connecticut State (12-10, 6-5 NEC) with a final score of 78-67 on Thursday night at Detrick Gymnasium. Despite forcing 15 turnovers and scoring 22 points off them, the Cougars could not overcome Central Conn. St.'s shooting efficiency.
 
The first half opened with CSU taking the early lead, highlighted by a jumper from CJ Ray at 18:51 and a three-pointer from Corey Sands at 18:22, pushing them ahead 5-0. Central Connecticut State responded with a dunk by Max Frazier, and Darin Smith Jr.'s free throws cut the deficit to one at 17:31. The teams exchanged leads throughout the half, with Ray contributing significantly for the Cougars, including a layup at 12:49 that tied the game at 14. The Blue Devils finished the half strong, with a three-pointer by Roddy Jones at 1:12 and subsequent free throws by Smith Jr., securing a 35-28 advantage at halftime.
 
CCSU maintained their lead throughout the second half, securing a 78-67 victory over Chicago State. Marcus Tankersley initiated a comeback effort for the Cougars with multiple layups, closing the gap to 41-38 early in the half. Smith Jr. responded quickly with a three-pointer for the Blue Devils, extending their lead once more. In the final minutes, Frazier contributed crucial points, including a fast-break dunk at 2:11, ensuring CCSU's control over the game. Despite a late three-pointer by Ray, the Cougars could not overcome the deficit.
 
Ray led the team with 22 points, converting 9 of 20 field goal attempts and adding six rebounds. Tankersley contributed 15 points, making six field goals and providing three assists. Braelon Bush made a defensive impact with three steals and also added five assists. Doyel Cockrill III recorded two steals and scored three points.
 
The next challenge for Chicago State will take place on the road as they face New Haven. This matchup is set for Saturday, Feb. 7, at noon at The Hazell Center in West Haven, Connecticut.
