DES MOINES, Iowa — Chicago State University fell to Drake University 7-0 on Friday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. Chicago State was unable to capture a singles or doubles match, with Drake securing all six singles points and the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Drake secured the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Ulysse Verrando and Adan Tarquino defeated
Joao Teixeira and
Justin Atkins 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Alan Gonzalez and Ben Johnson clinched the point with a 6-0 win over
Chad Valdes and
Andrew Kunaka at No. 2 doubles. The match at No. 3 doubles between
Yurii Hoida and
Reed Gahagan of Chicago State and Arin Menon and Alex Yeager of Drake was left unfinished at 4-1 in favor of Drake.
In singles play, Drake continued its strong performance, beginning with Sam Melaga's 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gahagan at No. 5 singles. Johnson added another point for Drake with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Teixeira at No. 3 singles. Menon then secured a straight-sets triumph, 6-2, 6-2, over Atkins at No. 6 singles.
Jose Hernandez delivered a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kunaka at No. 4 singles, and Gonzalez defeated Valdes 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The competition concluded with Christian Winstead's 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 victory over Hoida at No. 1 singles, completing a sweep for Drake.
