LORETTO, Pa. — Chicago State fell to Saint Francis 81-60 on Friday night at DeGol Arena. Despite the loss, CSU recorded 17 offensive rebounds, contributing to 26 points in the paint.
The game started with the Red Flash taking an early lead as Skylar Wicks hit a 3-pointer just 25 seconds into the action. The Cougars responded with
Corey Sands and
CJ Ray contributing early baskets to keep the game close. Despite a balanced attack from Chicago State, including a 3-pointer and several layups from Ray, SFU maintained their lead throughout the half with efficient shooting. Victor Payne and Chris Moncrief aided the home team with key 3-pointers, and Saint Francis ended the first half leading 47-32.
Saint Francis maintained control throughout the second half, starting with a layup by Wicks at 19:14 that extended their lead. Wicks continued to be a crucial player, contributing a dunk and a pair of free throws to keep the momentum going. Chicago State attempted to rally with consecutive three-pointers from
Doyel Cockrill III, cutting the deficit momentarily. However, Ahmad Harrison's late-game scoring, including a three-pointer at 1:58, helped secure SFU's 81-60 victory.
CJ Ray led CSU with 21 points, converting eight field goals on 19 attempts and making all four of his free throws.
Doyel Cockrill III contributed 13 points, hitting five of 11 from the field, including three 3-pointers.
Chauncey Gibson added 10 points and three assists, while also recording four rebounds.
Malek Robinson made his presence felt on defense with two steals.
The next challenge for the Cougars is on the horizon as they head to Erie, Pennsylvania, for a matchup against Mercyhurst University. The game is set for Sunday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. on Owen McCormick Court.
