WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Chicago State (2-16, 1-4 NEC) fell to New Haven (5-11, 3-2 NEC), 63-56, despite maintaining a narrow lead through three quarters. The Cougars matched New Haven in points in the paint with 26 points.
Chicago State opened the first quarter with a quick layup by
Brianna Hill following a steal by
Tania Allen, setting an early tone against the Chargers. The quarter saw a competitive exchange with a
Chloe Sisco 3-pointer to tie the game at 8-8 before adding another at 4:24. A late 3-pointer by
Kyara Champagne ensured CSU finished the quarter ahead, 15-13.
The second quarter featured a tight contest. The Cougars responded with a series of points in the paint, including layups by
Kayla Mount and
Brianna Hill, which briefly put them ahead 20-16. New Haven fought back to pull back the lead to go up 29-24. With 4 seconds left,
Keona McGee put the Cougars within one, but but a late free throw from the Chargers sealed the quarter for New Haven, ending with a 32-30 lead.
The third quarter featured a competitive back-and-forth between the Cougars and Chargers.
Kyara Champagne scored a layup at 7:36 to narrow the gap, and
Chloe Sisco followed with her third 3-pointer to give Chicago State a brief lead.
Keona McGee extended the lead with another 3-pointer, assisted by
Kace Urlacher. New Haven responded with a 3-pointer to tie the game, but
Paris Bass answered to closed the quarter with a layup putting the Cougars ahead 45-43.
In the fourth quarter, New Haven gained momentum early tying the game at 45.
Chloe Sisco responded for Chicago State with a 3-pointer at 6:45, narrowing the gap to 50-48. However, New Haven put a 3-pointer down from helped maintain their lead. Charger free throws down the stretch sealed New Haven's 63-56 victory, overcoming late efforts from the Cougars.
Chicago State was led by three double digit scorers.
Chloe Sisco and
Keona McGee led with 12 points each. Sisco went 4/8 from the three point line on the night.
Kyara Champagne follow behind adding 11 points shooting 4/5 from the field.
