NEW BRITAIN, CT - Chicago State women's basketball fought hard but came up just short in a thrilling contest against Central Connecticut, falling 62-61 at Detrick Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Despite a balanced scoring effort and late-game heroics, the Cougars couldn't overcome a strong second-half surge from the Blue Devils.
The Cougars came out strong, dominating much of the first half and holding a slim 33-31 lead at halftime. Aiyanna Culver led the way early, tallying 15 points, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, and pulling down 10 rebounds for a near double-double performance. Tania Allen also made her mark, adding 12 points and grabbing 7 rebounds off the bench.
Chicago State's offense was sharp in the first half, shooting 45.2% from the field and an impressive 40% from three-point range. The Cougars controlled the tempo, leading by as many as 10 points during the second quarter.
Central Connecticut stormed back in the second half, outscoring Chicago State 21-14 in the third quarter to take a narrow lead. Led by Belle Lanpher, who posted 19 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds, the Blue Devils capitalized on key turnovers and scored crucial second-chance points. Meghan Kenefick also contributed significantly, going 6-for-9 from the field for 13 points and grabbing 3 rebounds.
Central Connecticut's third-quarter dominance was highlighted by a 61.5% shooting performance, including a 25% clip from three-point range. The Blue Devils took their largest lead of the night, going up by 10 points late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with Chicago State clawing its way back into the game. A clutch three-pointer by Marisa Gant and strong bench play brought the Cougars within striking distance. Evangelina Parrish also stepped up, hitting a critical shot late in the game to keep Chicago State within one.
With 14 seconds left, Kayla Henry hit two crucial free throws for CCSU, giving them a 62-60 lead. Chicago State had one last opportunity, and Tania Allen was fouled with one second remaining. She made the first free throw but missed the second, sealing the narrow victory for Central Connecticut.
Chicago State will look to bounce back as they close the road swing at Wagner on Saturday.
