Cougars Show Heart in Battle Against Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. — Chicago State (1-9, 0-0 NEC) fell to Illinois State (8-2, 0-0 MVC) 95-53 on Saturday night at CEFCU Arena. The Cougars recorded nine steals, led by a defensive effort that forced Illinois State into 12 turnovers.
 
Illinois State established a commanding lead in the first half, opening with a 10-0 run highlighted by Ty Pence's layup and Boden Skunberg's back-to-back 3-pointers. Chase Walker contributed significantly with multiple assists, facilitating a balanced attack that saw nine 3-pointers from the home team. CSU struggled offensively, converting only four of 26 field goal attempts. Lionel Larvadain led CSU's scoring efforts with a layup at 16:45 and two free throws at 1:47. Illinois State closed the half with a fastbreak 3-pointer by Landon Moore, finishing ahead 45-13.
 
Illinois State maintained control throughout the second half, extending their advantage over CSU with efficient shooting and strong rebounding. Walker opened the scoring with a layup just 10 seconds into the half, assisted by Pence, setting the tone for Illinois State. Mason Klabo contributed three key 3-pointers, one of which came at the 6:41 mark, boosting the home team's lead. Despite efforts from Chicago State's CJ Ray, who hit back-to-back 3-pointers, Illinois State's balanced attack and depth off the bench led to a decisive 50-40 advantage by the end of the half.
 
Doyel Cockrill III scored 13 points and recorded two steals. Ray added 12 points while collecting eight rebounds. Marcus Tankersley finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Chauncey Gibson posted two steals and scored eight points.
 
In their next game, the Cougars will face Loyola University Chicago on Sunday, Dec. 14. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Gentile Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
