Chicago State’s Effort Highlights Growth in Tough Road Test

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Chicago State University men's basketball team fell to Youngstown State University with a final score of 87-64 on Tuesday night at Beeghly Center. Youngstown State capitalized on three-point shooting, hitting 17 of 41 attempts, while CSU managed 11 steals in the contest.
 
The game began with the Cougars taking an early lead, thanks to Braelon Bush's fast-break layup at the 19:31 mark. Youngstown State quickly responded with a series of three-pointers, including one by Rich Rolf at 18:50, to establish a 5-2 advantage. Jason Nelson played a pivotal role for the home team, contributing an assist and a layup to widen the gap. By the end of the first half, Youngstown State had extended their lead significantly, closing the half with a score of 46-26 after a final dunk by Imanuel Zorgvol at 00:07.
 
Youngstown State extended their lead early in the second half with a layup by Rich Rolf at 19:50, assisted by Cris Carroll. CSU responded with a jumper by CJ Ray at 18:45, but Youngstown State maintained control with three-pointers from Cris Carroll and Bryson Dawkins, expanding their lead to 54-30 by 16:30. Despite efforts from the Cougars, including a three-pointer by Chauncey Gibson at 12:55, Youngstown State continued to capitalize on their offensive opportunities with Jason Nelson's three-pointer at 6:23. In the latter stages, Braelon Bush added consecutive points for Chicago State, but Youngstown State held a comfortable 87-64 advantage to close the half.
 
Chauncey Gibson scored 14 points, making six field goals, including two from beyond the arc, and collected four rebounds. CJ Ray also tallied 14 points on five field goals and converted all four of his free throw attempts. Doyel Cockrill III contributed 11 points, recorded five assists, and added two 3-pointers. Braelon Bush posted 10 points and secured three steals while grabbing four rebounds.
 
In their next game, the Cougars will host Saint Xavier University on Monday, Dec. 1. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago, Illinois.
