Box Score The Chicago State volleyball team played in their second consecutive five-set match, this time coming up on the short end, 3-2, against Samford in both team's final match of the Dunn Hospitality Tournament Sunday afternoon in Evansville, Indiana.
The Cougars dropped the first set 25-19 as Samford extended a 21-19 lead to a 25-19 final. Game two was also close throughout and Chicago State took control of a 20-20 tie, scoring five of the match's final eight points for a 25-23 win. In the third game, Samford led 6-2, 14-6 and 18-11 before CSU reeled off five straight points to pull within two, 18-16 and again at 20-18. The Cougars cut the gap to one, 21-20, before Samford extended the lead to the 25-21 final. In what could have been the match-clinching game, Samford started strong again jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Chicago State rallied to tie the game 7-7. The match would be tied on five occasions when, tied at 18-18, the Cougars scored four of the next five and wouldn't trail again to force a decisive fifth game, winning game four 25-22. Chicago State held an 11-8 advantage when Samford reeled off five straight points to take a 13-11 lead. Following a
Berenice Almeyda kill, Samford moved to match point and were turned away by a
Patrycja Lagida kill and a 14-13 advantage. Samford put the match away will a kill to hold off the Cougars 15-13.
Lagida led both teams in kills (26) and attacks (66) and
Andrea Calderon led all players with 24 digs.
Wiktoria Zagumny led the Cougars with 43 assists and
Julieta Sandez led in blocks with eight.
The Cougars will be back in action Friday, September 13 at the Indiana Invitational, playing host Indiana at 11 a.m. at Wilkinson Hall in Bloomington, Indiana.Â
