Box Score The Chicago State women's tennis team gutted out a tough 4-3 victory over Cleveland State Sunday afternoon at H-F Racquet and Fitness in Homewood. With the victory, the Cougars climb to 2-1 in Horizon League play, now tied with both Youngstown State and Cleveland State and a match behind Northern Kentucky who is currently 2-0.
The Cougars earned the doubles point with two of three matches going into tie breakers which were decided by slim margins.
Ethel Li and
Sofiya Sedovich won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles then Chicago State lost at No. 1, 7-6 (5) leaving the deciding match at No. 3 where
Katarina Dukic and
Amina Taibi pulled out a 7-6 (6) win for the team point.
In singles, the teams split the first four matches with the Cougars claiming victories at No. 3 (
Sofiya Sedovich) and No. 4 (
Amina Taibi) before freshman
Helin Alvarez earned a straight-set win at No. 6 to clinch the team win for Chicago State.
"This match was not for the faint of heart," head coach
Jack Barton said. "I really am proud of the way our girls bounced back from yesterday's performance (5-2 loss against Youngstown State). We corrected all the problems we had from yesterday. Pre game, I told the team that Cleveland State is like the terminator. They will keep coming, they will fight, and they will not give up. So we were able to weather the storm with a really tough mental attitude."
