Chicago State Women’s Tennis Pulls Out 4-3 Victory Over Georgia State

Box Score Tied 3-3 with just one match on the court to determine the outcome, Manuella Eloudou won in three sets to give Chicago State a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood. The visiting Panthers are coached by LeTrone Mason who was the head coach at Chicago State prior to the arrival of Cougars current head coach Jack Barton, the longest-tenured coach on the CSU staff. Mason led the Cougars women's team to a National Independent Tennis Championship in 2009.

The Cougars won the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 leaving the match at No. 1 finished where CSU led 5-4. In singles, the two teams split the first two matches with Amina Taibi picking up a win when her opponent suffered an injury and couldn't continue. Taibi trailed by a set and the second set was tied 6-6 at the time the match ended. Helin Alvarez won at No. 5 singles in straight sets before Georgia State won at No. 3 to tie the contest 3-3 setting the stage for Eloundou's victory.

"We don't take this win lightly," head coach Jack Barton said. "The young lady (Andrea Stanescu) who played Amina got hurt and had to retire due to a serious knee injury. We know it's a part of the sport but you never want to win like that so we want to wish the young lady a speedy recovery.

"I thought both teams played their hearts out and we happened to come out on the winning side. It is good to see coach Mason come back home. He is doing a great job with his team.

"Today was a great team win. This was another exciting match and we are happy to win a 4-3 match. The ladies are really battling hard and coming into their own. I think their confidence has risen 100% and they are on top of the world.

"They're happy to get a few days off but we want to be sharp for the next match against UIC. The last 30 days they've played some exciting tennis."
