Cougars Women’s Tennis Gets Past UC Irvine 6-1

Box Score The Chicago State women's tennis team broke open a close match and beat UC Irvine 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood. The Cougars swept the doubles point and the first two singles matches before Irvine broke through with a win at No. 5. Nia Cooper won at No. 6 in three sets and a third-set tiebreaker to seal the win in a pivotal match.

"This was another match where the other team pushed us toward the end of doubles and singles," head coach Jack Barton said. "Although we were up 3-0, it could have ended in a 4-3 loss. UC Irvine got better as the matches went on, but our women used their past experiences and really focused on how to improve mentally so we could withstand the push they made. I reminded them that that the past is in the past and we have to move forward, learn from past experiences and execute the game plan with confidence and discipline. Today was a true team win and I am proud of the team. We will enjoy this one for today because we have a tough team tomorrow in Georgia State."

The Cougars will be back on the court tomorrow, Sunday, March 3, against Georgia State at 10 a.m. at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood, Illinois. The Panthers are coached by LeTrone Mason who was the head coach at Chicago State prior to the arrival of Cougars current head coach Jack Barton, the longest-tenured coach on the CSU staff. Mason led the Cougars women's team to a National Independent Tennis Championship in 2009.
