St. Louis U Gets Past Chicago State 4-3 in Women’s Tennis

Box Score The Chicago State women's tennis team played their fifth 4-3 decision in their last six matches with Saint Louis pulling out the victory with a three-set win at No. 5 singles in a gutsy performance by CSU's Ethel Li Saturday night at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood. The stage was set when, after losing the doubles point, Katarina Dukic, Sofiya Sedovich and Amina Taibi each earned victories to tie the match 3-3, setting up the decisive match where Li battled her opponent and cramps and ultimately came up just short.

"Today was a tough day," head coach Jack Barton said. "We came close in both matches we just couldn't pull it off. Both teams gave their all. I could not be more proud of the fight they showed. It was another 4-3 loss for the women and I know how disappointed they are. Last week was the longest women's match I've coached and this one was four hours and six minutes of really exciting tennis. Ethel Li played one of the bravest matches I've seen in a long time. She was down 5-1 and had tennis ball-sized cramps in her legs. She came back all the way to 5-4 but couldn't go anymore but I'm proud she played all the way through and never gave up. My hat's off to (athletic trainer) Ashley (Ware) whose training skills really kept her in the match and gave us a chance."

The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow, February 25, taking Chicago at Henry Crown Field House at 4 p.m.
