Cougars Men’s Basketball Drop Home Opener to Youngstown State

Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team dropped their home opener to Youngstown State 80-60 Saturday night at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. After a tight first half, the Penguins went on a 15-2 run in the second half to leave the Cougars playing catch up. 

Gabe Spinelli was one of four Cougars in double figures with 15, followed by Jalen Forrest with 11 and Sax Sunderland and Cam Jernigan each contributing 10.

The first half featured five lead changes with neither team leading by more than six points and, after Chicago State opened the scoring in the second half to cut the Youngstown State lead to a point, 32-31, the Penguins went on that 15-2 run to jump out to a 14-point lead with 15:39 remaining.

The Cougars went on an 8-2 run to cut the margin to single digits, 49-41, before the Penguins pushed the margin back to 13 with a 5-0 spurt to lead 54-41 at the 11:43 mark. Youngstown State couldn't shut the door as CSU scored 11 of the next 15 points and the lead was just six, 58-52, with 9:15 remaining to play. The Penguins Nico Galette then took over for YSU, scoring the next seven points to put Youngstown State back up 13, 65-52, at the 6:39 mark and Youngstown State then cruised to the 20-point win.

Chicago State will be back in action Tuesday, November 12, traveling to Austin, Texas to play the University of Texas at 7 p.m. at the Moody Center.
