Box Score Sophomore
Mari Williams delivered a senior day gift to nine Chicago State student-athletes playing in their final game for the Cougars Sunday afternoon at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep in Chicago. Williams banged home a goal in the 39th minute and the lone score held as the Cougars won their first game of the season which was also the first victory in the Northeast Conference with a 1-0 win over Delaware State.
The Cougars controlled the action for a majority of the game and had several good scoring chances turned away. CSU outshot the Hornets 20-1 and held an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal, which included a penalty kick fielded by Hornets goal keeper Katie Knapp who was credited with 10 saves. Cougars goal keeper
Jay Arballo didn't face the same offensive pressure in this game but the senior delivered her first shut out of the season in her final game of her collegiate career.
Other seniors honored pregame included
Juliette Palechor, Barbie Castellanos, Karoline Riisnæs,
Katie Dohnel,
Hannah Bennett,
Brianna Sanchez,
Trinity Babcock and
Chiara Canini. Two additional Cougars,
Delaney Kenney and
Citlali Zambrano, also played in their final game but celebrated their senior day a season ago.
Kenney led all players with five shots and tied with Castellanos with three shots on goal. Bennett registered four shots with two on goal and Sanchez had a shot which was on net. Riisnæs, Zambrano and Babcock each played the entire 90 minutes of the final games.
