Cougars Men’s Soccer Earn First NEC Win with 4-2 Victory at CCSU

Danail Sergiev Scores Two Goals to Push Team Lead to Five on the Season

Box Score The Chicago State men's soccer earned their first Northeast Conference victory with a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon against Central Connecticut State at the CCSU Soccer Field in New Britain, Connecticut. 

The Cougars scored first in this one when Danail Sergiev found the back of the net in the 32nd minute set up by passes from Bruno Baez and Dasha Curiel and CSU led 1-0 at the end the first half. CCSU got the equalizer in the 53rd minute then took their first lead of the game in the 62nd minute. Sergiev scored his second goal of the match nearly three minutes later off an assist from Shaquan Reid and the score was knotted again, 2-2. The teams were deadlocked for the next 20 minutes when Dasha Curiel broke through in the 86th minute off of a Sergiev assist and the Cougars led 3-2 with just over three minutes left to play. Chicago State netted their final and fourth goal in the 88th minute when Luka Assaf scored on a Hilary Odhiambo assist and the Cougars secured their first NEC victory.

Chicago State held a 13-11 in shots and a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Cougars goal keeper was credited with three saves while Sergiev led CSU with five shots and Curiel led in shots on goal with three.

With the win, Chicago State improves to 1-2-1 in the Northeast Conference while CCSU falls to 0-4 on league play. The Cougars will be back in action Sunday, October 20, traveling to Loretto, Pennsylvania to face Saint Francis at Stokes Soccerplex at 11 a.m. CT.
