UTEP Slips Past Chicago State 74-69 in Men’s Basketball

Box Score In game featuring nine ties and 15 lead changes, the UTEP Miners took a late lead and held on for a 74-69 victory over the Chicago State men's basketball team Sunday afternoon at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. 

Neither team led by more than three points in the first half until the final minute when UTEP closed the first 20 minutes with a 6-2 run on back-to-back threes to take their largest lead into the locker room at halftime, 37-32. 

The Cougars came out of the locker room and scored the first seven points of the second half to tie the game for the seventh time then lead by two, 39-37. The Miners responded with a 6-0 run to regain the lead. The teams continued to exchange hoops until the 13:59 mark when Wesley Cardet hit a three to start a 7-1 Cougars run and Chicago State had their largest lead of the game, five points, 53-48, with 12:25 remaining in regulation. UTEP erased that lead to go up one on a three but Jahsean Corbett scored off a rebound and, following a Miners three, Noble Crawford hit back-to-backs threes and CSU led by four, 61-57, at the 7:50 mark.

UTEP pulled to within one on two occasions before getting over the hump with a driving layup at the 1:40 mark and capped a 7-0 run with a three-point lead with 1:21 remaining. The Cougars cut it to two with a pair of Tristan Arneaud free throws and the Miners answered with a pair of their own and led by three when Arneaud hit a pull-up jumper with 27 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one, 70-69. UTEP closed out the game at the line making all four attempts down the stretch for the five-point win.

Jahsean Corbett led all scorers with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Noble Crawford was the only other Cougars player in double figures with 18.

The Cougars will be back in action Wednesday, January 10 at future NEC opponent FDU at Stratis Arena in Hackensack, New Jersey.
