Jahsean Corbett, the Chicago State men's basketball team broke open a tight game with a 13-6 run in the final minutes to beat Stetson 77-70 Monday night at the Edmunds Center in DeLand, Florida. The win was the second for the Cougars over the Hatters this season as the CSU beat Stetson 77-54 at the beginning of December.
Wesley Cardet was one of three Cougars players in double figures and he led all scorers with 29 points including converting 15-of-17 free throws and 7-of-11 from the field.
Jahsean Corbett had 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting as the CSU shot 45.6 percent from the field as a team and out rebounded the Hatters 36-28.
Brent Davis was the third double-point scorer with 11 which included three makes from beyond the three-point arc.
Stetson scored the first five points of the game before
Cameron Jernigan got the Cougars on the board with layup and extended the margin to 10-2 to put CSU in an early hole. The Hatters extended the margin to 11 points with a three at the 15:01 mark to lead 15-4. Stetson led by 10, 19-9, when a 7-2 Cougars run on a Corbett and-1, Wesley Cardet free three and
Brent Davis three and the lead was just five, 21-16. The Cougars battled to their first lead of the game at the 5:01 mark on a Corbett layup and outscored Stetson 13-8 over the final five minutes to lead 44-38 at the half.
The Hatters clawed away at the lead and pulled even at 49-49 at the 15:28 mark and pulled ahead with a three just over a minute later and led by as many as four before the Cougars knotted the score at 59-59 with 8:37 left in regulation. Stetson pulled ahead and CSU tied at 64-64 with a driving layup by Cardet and extended that margin to five points, 69-64, before pulling away from the free throw line and several second-chance opportunities.Â
The Cougars will be back in action Friday, January 19, hosting East-West University at the JCC at 7 p.m. at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago.
