Cougars VB Wrap Up Windy City Classic with 3-0 Win Over SE Missouri State

Box Score The Chicago State volleyball team wrapped up play in the two-day Windy City Classic with a 3-0 win against Southeast Missouri State Saturday afternoon at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The Cougars faced three third-set set points and eventually pulled out a 30-28 win. CSU was led by Patrycja Lagida with 15 kills, followed by Yanlis Feliz with 11 and Julieta Sandez with 10. Wiktoria Zagumny had 39 assists and Sandez had 15 digs to lead those respective categories.

The Cougars (4-1) will be back in action next weekend at the Golden Grizzlies Classic hosted by Oakland University, facing Kansas City in the first match Friday, September 8 at 9 a.m. then Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m. at the OU Credit Union O'rena in Rochester, Michigan. CSU will conclude the two-day tournament against tournament host Oakland on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m.

Set 1 - Chicago State 25, SE Missouri State 23
-Chicago State faced set point, trailing 24-23, but a kill by freshman Wiktoria Zagumny knotted the match at 24-24 before Patricia Lagida served an ace and an attack error by SEMO completed the Cougars comeback
-The Cougars trailed throughout including a 7-3 deficit but rallied to tie 9-9, 15-15 before taking their first lead at 16-15
-The match was knotted at 16-16, 18-18, 22-22 and 23-23 before CSU pulled out the win

Set 2 - Chicago State 25, SE Missouri State 17
-The Cougars never trailed in a 25-17 second-set win, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and maintained that gap throughout the match, leading by as many as seven on on two occasions and by nine in the last stages before closing out the win with a Lagida kill and SEMO attack error

Set 3 - Chicago State 30, SE Missouri State 28
-SEMO started the third set strong with the first three points before CSU took advantage of an attack error and Yanlis Feliz ace to cut the gap to 3-2
-The teams exchanged points before SEMO reeled off three straight to lead 7-3 but a service error and two attack errors brought the Cougars back within one, 7-6
-The Redhawks scored seven of the next eight to double up CSU 14-7 and led 17-10 before the Cougars rallied, scoring seven of the next eight and were only down one, 18-17
-SEMO led 21-18 when Julieta Sandez and Yanlis Feliz recorded kills followed by a SEMO attack error to knot the score 21-21
-The Cougars then reeled off three straight points on two Feliz kills and an attack error but SEMO staved off two set and match points to eventually lead 25-24
-Facing set point, Mesalina Severino had a kill and Feliz served up an ace and CSU had another set and match point but SEMO reeled off consecutive points to turn the tables. Facing a set point of their own, Patrycja Lagida had a kill to knot the score 27-27.
-A SEMO kill and the Cougars faced another set point but another Lagida kill tied the score at 28-28, followed by a SEMO attack error and the Cougars were serving for the set and match when Lagida notched her 15th kill to seal the Chicago State win.
