James (DJ) Johnson has been named Assistant Athletic Director for Strength and Conditioning for Chicago State University Athletics, CSU Athletic Director Dr. Monique Carroll announced today.
Johnson will oversee strength and conditioning efforts for all 15 Cougar athletic teams.
"Strength and conditioning for our student-athletes is a cornerstone to competitive success," Dr. Carroll said. "Coach Johnson is a dynamic addition to our staff and I look forward to his ability to lift our student-athletes to elite performance."
Prior to CSU, Johnson served as strength and conditioning coach at Huston-Tillotson University (2023) as well as a physical education teacher, advisor, and strength coach at St. Andrew's Episcopal School (2022-23) in Austin, Texas.Â
Johnson spent eight years as a coach in various roles at St. Stephen's Episcopal School, primarily as football offensive coordinator, and head track and field coach, helping each team to championships.Â
Johnson was a four-year letterman at defensive back, earning All-Big 12 honors as a senior at Texas Tech, where he earned his Bachelors of Science in Psychology, with a minor in Exercise and Sports Science in 2012. Johnson has certifications from the Professional Fitness Training Association (PFTA), the National Council of Strength & Fitness (NCSF), and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS).Â
