Box Score The Chicago State men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Cleveland State Saturday afternoon at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland State pulled out the doubles point and seized momentum in the match after
Pedro Alvarez and
Max Sandoval earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles and the Vikings won at No. 2 leaving the deciding match at No. 3 where they won 7-6 (7-1) to claim the point and early advantage. At that point, the Vikings swept singles until the very last match where Alvarez won at No. 2 in three sets, 6-3, 7-6 (2-7), 1-1 (10-5), to avoid the sweep.
"The doubles point was within our reach to win," head coach
Jack Barton said. "Max (Sandoval) and Pedro (Alvarez) won and the other doubles were up 5-4 and we were unable to finish. From there, we gave Cleveland State the boost they needed and they pretty much had their way with us at the bottom four singles positions. Pedro told the guys in our post match that we cannot give up because we still have a chance to make the tournament, so we will keep working."
