Chicago State Men’s Tennis Drop 4-3 Decision to Youngstown State

Cougars on the road next week at Youngstown State and Cleveland State

Box Score The Chicago State men's tennis team lost to Youngstown State 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club in Homewood, Illinois. Chicago State got swept in doubles to lose the team point and trailed 1-0 heading into singles. In singles, the Penguins won at No. 6 to go up 2-0 in the match before Max Sandoval earned a straight-set win at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0. Youngstown State won at No. 1 before the Cougars claimed victories at No. 2 (Pedro Alvarez) and No. 3 (Rodrigo Alves), leaving the deciding match at No. 5 where Arhaan Pahwa lost in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6 and YSU earned the 4-3 victory.

"It's really tough as a coach to find the words to say today to my guys," head coach Jack Barton said. "I thought they played great yesterday, and today was even better. They are really disappointed and it makes me feel good to know they care so much. The effort they gave today was incredible. Doubles wasn't good, but they really woke up in singles.  We got a win from Max (Sandoval) in straight sets and then four of the remaining five singles matches went three sets.

"We talked last week about growth and something must have clicked because they really grew this weekend. If you looked at our record and came into this weekend to play two conferences champions, you would have thought to throw in the towel, but these guys gave their heart and soul today and represented themselves, their families and Chicago State proudly."

Compete results listed below.

The Cougars will be back in Horizon League play next week, traveling to Youngstown, Ohio to face this same Youngstown State team on Friday, April 7 then at Cleveland Saturday, April 8 to face Cleveland State.
