Two Cougars Score in Double Figures in Loss Against Cleveland State

The Chicago State women's basketball team faced off against the Cleveland State Vikings and suffered an 88-4 loss.

Janiah Newell finished with 12 points, while Josie Hill finished with 10, and Tae'Lor Willard with seven.

First Quarter - Cleveland State 16, Chicago State 7

  • The Viking jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, however, the Cougars quickly retaliated with a trey from Newell to tie it all up 3-3
  • Newell then went on to make another jumper to gain a 5-3 lead
  • Nonetheless, the Vikings answered right back with a deuce of their own to tie it up once again at 5-5
  • Fortunately, Josie Hill then drove in for a lay up and retain the lead at 7-5
  • Unfortunately, the Vikings suddenly erupted with an 11-0 run to stun the Cougars and retain the lead by 9 at 16-7

Second Quarter - Cleveland State 38, Chicago State 17

  • The Vikings began by continuing their run and scoring a deuce to reach an 18-7 score
  • However, a jumper from Hill for the Cougars cut the run and reached a 9-18 score
  • The Vikings then went on to continue their scoring streak as they outscored the Cougars 20-8 to head into halftime with a 21-point lead at 38-17

Third Quarter - Cleveland State 73, Chicago State 31

  • This time the Cougars opened up the scoring with a lay up from Newell to reach a 19-38 score
  • However, Cleveland State then went on an 8-2 run to continue in the lead at 46-21
  • The Vikings would end up finishing the quarter on a 7-0 run as they easily cruised towards victory heading into the fourth at 73-31

Fourth Quarter - Cleveland State 88, Chicago State 49

  • The Vikings continued their streak and opened up the scoring with a another 8-0 run as they comfortably led 81-34
  • Surprisingly, the Cougars managed to outscore the Vikings 15-8 to finish the game however it was too late as Cleveland took the win easily at 88-49

The Cougars will next take on the Hartford Hawks back at the JCC on February 25th at 1 PM.
