The Chicago State women's basketball team faced off against the Saint Xavier Cougars and won 70-63.
Josie Hill led in points with 15, while Janiah Newell and Jacia Cunningham added on 13 each!
First Quarter - Chicago State 21, Saint Xavier 11
- Saint Xavier came out and opened up the scoring with a deuce, however, Chicago State retaliated right away with a jumper from Janiah Newell to tie it up 2-2
- This set a trend of back-and-forth scoring up until a 6-6 score where suddenly the Cougars erupted with a 15-5 run
- Newell, Taylor Norris, Tae'Lor Willard, and Hill all converted buckets in this run to gift the Cougars a comfortable 21-11 lead at the half
Second Quarter - Chicago State 41, Saint Xavier 24
- Saint Xavier once again opened up the scoring this time with a 3-0 run
- Nonetheless, Chicago State answered back with a 9-0 run featuring buckets from Ahlea Myers, Laura Segues, and Hill
- Saint Xavier then cut the run with a trey, however, Chicago State bounced back with an 11-7 run to maintain their lead at the half with a score of 41-24
Third Quarter - Chicago State 58, Saint Xavier 40
- This time Chicago State opened up the scoring with a deuce from Ana Haklicka to remain in the lead at 43-24
- Saint Xavier then scored a two of their own, however, the Cougars answered back with a 5-0 run featuring a lay up from Norris and and a trey from Newell
- This back-and-forth scoring set a trend for the remainder of the quarter as Chicago State remained in the lead heading into the fourth at 58-40
Fourth Quarter - Chicago State 70, Saint Xavier 63
- Saint Xavier once again opened up the scoring, this time with a 5-0 run to reach a 45-58 score
- Nonetheless, Chicago State then went on a 5-2 run with two jumpers and a free throw from Jacia Cunningham to retain momentum at 63-47
- However, Said Xavier suddenly executed a 7-0 run and trailed only by six at 59-65
- Chicago State managed to narrowly escape with the victory with a 70-63 score
Chicago State will next face off against Cleveland State in Cleveland, OH on Tuesday.
