Cougars Split Pair in Women’s Tennis Doubleheader for Third Time this Season

Rally Past North Dakota 4-3, Drop 4-2 Decision at Notre Dame

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Chicago State women's tennis team earned a thrilling 4-3 come-from-behind win over North Dakota Sunday in the first of two matches on the day for the Cougars. Chicago State then traveled to South Bend and took the fight to the Irish before losing 4-2. Against the Fighting Hawks, Chicago State lost the doubles point and trailed in the match 3-0 after UND won at No. 2 and 5 singles. Needing just one win in the remaining four matches, the Cougars rallied and won in straight sets at No. 6 (Ethel Li) and No. 3 (Katarina Dukic), before Sofiya Sedovich earned a three-set win at No. 4, leaving the deciding match at No. 1 where Cali Fuller earned a three-set victory of her own to cap the rally and deliver the 4-3 Chicago State victory. Against Notre Dame, the Irish won the doubles point and the first singles match to jump out to a 2-0 lead before Ethel Li (No. 5) and Amina Taibi (No. 6) each won to knot the score 2-2. Notre Dame then picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to seal the victory for the Irish.

"Today was a good day to be a Cougar," head coach Jack Barton said. "Amina had a big win against Notre Dame. Ethel and Keti have been as solid as a rock with leading our comeback against North Dakota. Cali and Sofiya broke through some struggles they were having earlier in the week. Everyone has done something to contribute to the success of the team this month.

"I put before them a challenging and difficult February schedule. Some of them thought I was crazy, but now that they look back on it, I think they learned something about themselves and their competitive spirit. I don't like it when we always have to come from behind, but it shows character when they fall behind and fight back. They never give up."

"For the month of February, they put together seven team wins, 33 singles wins, which translates to 52 percent of their singles matches. We went 5-1 on home matches we hosted. I am really proud how they stepped up this month."

The women's tennis team will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Colorado for a pair of matches, taking on the Air Force Academy on Saturday, March 4 at 4 p.m. in Colorado Spring, then heading to Fort Collins to face Colorado State on Sunday, March 5 at 11 a.m.
