Cougars Men’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight for First Time Since 2008-09 with 55-54 Win over Bethune-Cookman

Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team broke open a tight game with an 9-0 run midway through the second half in a game that featured six ties and nine lead changes. Bethune-Cookman was down one, with possession, playing for the final shot which rimmed out giving the Cougars a 55-54 win Wednesday night at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The victory was Chicago State's fourth in a row which CSU last accomplished during 2008-09 season when the Cougars won seven of their final eight games which included a five-game win streak.

Wesley Cardet was one of two Cougars in double figures with 17 while Jahsean Corbett added 13. Both Cardet and Corbett pulled down seven boards apiece while Brent Davis had three blocks and three steals to go along with nine points.

Chicago State will be back in action Friday, December 22 traveling to Madison, Wisconsin to face the Badgers at 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center.

1st Half -Chicago State 30, Bethune-Cookman 29
-Bethune-Cookman jumped out to a 7-3 lead with Cameron Jernigan providing CSU their opening points with a free throw followed by a driving layup
-Noble Crawford scored followed by an A.J. Neal three and Chicago State had their first lead, 8-7, at the 16:47 mark
-The Wildcats had a 6-2 run with Deshawn Jean-Charles providing CSU's bucket and B-C led 13-10 with 14:12 left until the half
-Teshaundre Cole cut the lead to one before B-C went on a 4-0 run for their largest lead of the game, five points, 17-12
-Jahsean Corbett got on the board with a second-chance layup and Wesley Cardet tie the game with a three, 17-17, at the 10:32 mark
-A pair of Crawford free throws put the Cougars up two and B-C responded with a score for the second tie of the game at the 8:48 mark
-Brent Davis then hit a three to put CSU up 22-19 and a pair of B-C free throws brought the Wildcats to within one, 22-21
-The teams exchanged baskets with Corbett scoring underneath before both teams suffered a scoring drought of around four minutes before Corbett drained a pair of free throws and Chicago State led 26-23 with 2:28 remaining until the half
-The Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to take a one-point lead at the 1:03 mark
-Wesley Cardet tied and gave the Cougars a one-point lead with a pair of free throws and Corbett scored on a drive following a B-C turnover to extend the lead to three, 30-27
-B-C closed the first-half scoring with a jumper and Chicago State led 30-29 after the first 20 minutes

2nd Half - Chicago State 25, Bethune-Cookman 25
-The Wildcats opened the second half with a pair of free throws to tie and take a one-point lead, 31-30
-CSU got on the board with a Brent Davis layup and three pointer to go up four, 35-31, at the 17:33 mark
-Bethune-Cookman then went on a 6-0 run to re-take a two-point lead, 37-35 at the 16:03 mark
-The Cougars responded with a 9-0 run on three scores by Cardet and a Corbett three and Chicago State had their largest lead of the game, seven points, 44-37, at the 13:27 mark
-The Wildcats hit a three to stop the run and Cameron Jernigan put him a thunderous dunk followed by a Cardet three and the Cougars had their largest lead, nine points, 49-40, at the 9:20 mark
-The next eight points came via the charity stripe, five for B-C and three off the hand of Cardet and the Wildcats knocked the CSU lead down to 52-45 with 4:24 remaining in regulation
-The Wildcats scored on a driving layup and Corbett knocked down two free throws and the lead remained seven, 54-47, with 3:20 left in regulation
-Bethune-Cookman answered with a three to cut the margin to three and Davis converted a free throw and the lead was five, 55-50
-The Wildcats cut the lead to a single point with back-to-back scores and it was 55-54 Chicago State with :46 seconds remaining in regulation
-Bethune-Cookman gained possession with :22 seconds remaining to play and held for the final shot but failed to convert and Chicago State held on for the 55-54 victory
