Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team broke open a tight game with an 8-0 run midway through the first half and led by as many as 10 and by double figures for a majority of the second half, cruising to their third straight win with a 78-68 victory over UTRGV Monday night at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago.
Jahsean Corbett opened the scoring for Chicago State and notched his 1,000th career point and into the top 10 in career scoring at CSU finishing with eight points. Wesley Cardet led all scorers with 20 points and
Noble Crawford 14 and
Brent Davis 11 to round out CSU's double-digit scorer's. Corbett led all players with nine rebounds.
Chicago State will be back in action Wednesday at home against Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. and will close the week traveling to Madison, Wisconsin to face the Badgers at 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
1st Half -Chicago State 36, UTRGV 27
-Chicago State scored the game's first points on a layup by
Jahsean Corbett, his 1,000th career points
-UTRGV then went on a 7-0 run before Wesley Cardet made a pair of free throws followed by a Corbett score and the visitor's led 7-6 at the 15:39 mark
-The Vaqueros made a pair of free throws when the Cougars went on a 7-0 run of their own on hoops by
Noble Crawford and
Deshawn Jean-Charles and CSU tied and took a four-point lead, 13-9, with 14:20 remaining in the half
-UTRGV went on a 5-0 run to retake the lead, 14-13
-Jean-Charles started an 8-0 with a bucket followed by a Crawford dunk, a driving layup by Wesley Cardet and a Corbett layup and the Cougars led by seven, 21-14
-The next five points came from the free throw line, four by UTRGV, to cut the lead to four, 22-18
-Teshaundre Cole got into the scoring column with a second-chance layup followed by a Cardet three and CSU led by nine, 27-18, at the 6:22 mark
-UTRGV cut the margin to three with four free throws and a layup and
A.J. Neal stopped the run with a layup and the CSU lead was five, 29-24
-Following a UTRGV score,
Brent Davis hit a three to spurt a 7-1 run to end the half as Neal and Cardet contributed hoops in the closing minutes and the Cougars went into the locker room leading 36-27 at the half
2nd Half - Chicago State 42, UTRGV 41
-The Cougars opened the second half with a 5-1 run on a pair of Crawford free throws and a three and Chicago State had its largest lead, 13 points, 41-28
-UTRGV countered with a 6-1 run with lone CSU point a free throw off the hands of
Cameron Jernigan and the lead was eight, 42-34, at the 16:57 mark
-Chicago State then went on a 7-0 run on a pair of Davis free throws, a Neal three and a Cardet layup and the CSU lead was 15, 49-34, at the 15:58 mark
-The Vaqueros cut the margin to nine with a 9-3 run and CSU led 52-43 at the 12:25 mark
-The Cougars moved the lead back to double digits following a Cole layup and a pair of Jean-Charles free throws and the lead was 13, 56-43, with 10:12 remaining in regulation
-UTRGV converted a three and following a 7-2 Cougars run and the Cougars matched their largest lead of the game, 15 points, 63-48, with 8:10 remaining in regulation
-The Vaqueros pulled to within 12 on two occasions and to 11 at the 2:34 mark before the Cougars cruised to the 10-point win
