Cougars Men’s Basketball Score Final 10 Points to Get Past Valparaiso 63-62

Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team erased a nine-point Valparaiso lead in the final 4:21 with a 10-0 run capped by a driving Wesley Cardet layup with 2.8 seconds remaining in the game to earn a 63-62 victory over the Beacons Saturday afternoon at the Athletics-Recreation Center in Valparaiso, Indiana. 

The Cougars opened the game with a 10-0 run but Valparaiso battled back to tie and take a lead just before half before Jahsean Corbett scored just before the buzzer to give Chicago State a one-point lead at the halftime break. The Beacons opened the second half with a 5-0 run and led throughout and by as many as 10 before the Cougars staged their late comeback. 

Wesley Cardet led all scorers with 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting including 3-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Jahseasn Corbett was the only other player in double figures with 14 and he was also the leading rebounder with eight.

Chicago State will be back in action with a pair of home games next week, hosting for Western Athletic Conference foe UTRGV on Monday, December 18 then Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday, December 20. Both games are at 7 p.m. at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago.

1st Half -Chicago State 33, Valparaiso 32 
-The Cougars jumped out to a 10-0 run on jumper and a three by Wesley Cardet to open the scoring, following by a layup and pair of free throws by Cameron Jernigan
-The Beacons scored their first points of the game at the 15:46 mark and turned it into a 7-2 run to cut the lead to five, 12-7 at the 12:38 mark
-Jahsean Corbett stopped the run with a pair of free throws and a Deshawn Jean-Charles and Jernigan dunk capped a 7-3 CSU run and Chicago State opened the lead back up to nine, 19-10, with 10:35 remaining in the first half
-Following a Valpo jumper, Brent Davis hit a three and the Cougars matched their biggest lead of the game, 10 points, 22-12
-Valpo cut the margin to six and, once again, CSU answered with a Cardet free throw and three to push the margin back to 10, 26-16, at the 5:26 mark
-The Beacons then reeled off a 9-2 run to cut the margin to three, 28-25 with Cardet providing the CSU score
-Davis converted a free throw and Teshaundre Cole a layup to put CSU up 31-25 with 1:37 until the half 
-The Beacons then went on a 6-0 run to tie then took their first lead with a free throw before Corbett converted a layup to give Chicago State a one-point lead at the half, 33-32

2nd Half - Chicago State 30, Valparaiso 30 
-Valpo opened the scoring with a 5-0 run to re-take the lead before the Cougars got on the board with a Cardet free throw
-Following a Valpo three to give the Beacons their largest lead of the game, six points, 40-34, Corbett hit a pair of free throws and a pair of free throws to cut the margin to four
-Valpo extended to six when Noble Crawford slammed home a dunk followed by two Cardet free throws and the margin was just two, 42-40, with 14:25 remaining in regulation
-The Beacons hit a three followed by a Cardet layup when Valpo went on a 7-2 run to go up eight, 52-44, at the 10:15 mark
-Chicago State responded with a 6-2 run on a Corbett layup, two Cardet layups and dunk and the Valpo lead was just four, 54-50, at the 7:12 mark
-Valpo again extended the lead to 10 with a 6-0 run and following a Cardet three, Valpo answered with a hoop to lead by nine, 62-53, with 4:21 remaining
-Brent Davis hit a three to start a 10-0 Cougars run to close out the game and Cardet capped the run with a driving layup with 2.8 second remaining to play and a long Valpo attempt bounced off the iron as the Cougars claimed the one-point victory
