Cougars MBB Falls to Delaware State 76-69

Box Score Three players scored in double figures led by Wesley Cardet's 22 points but the Cougars lost to Delaware State 76-69 Thursday night at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The Cougars trailed by as many as 13 in the first half but battled back to take a one-point lead in the final four minutes but the Hornets closed the half with a 6-0 run to take a nine-point lead into the locker room at halftime. Delaware State led by double figures much of the second half but CSU managed to cut the lead to five with 7:27 remaining but a 9-0 Hornets run pushed the lead back into double figures and the Cougars would get to within six with 0:43 remaining but Delaware State closed out the game at the line for the eventual seven-point win.

In addition to Cardet's 22 points, Brent Davis had 16 and Deshawn Jean-Charles added 13. Davis led Chicago State with six rebounds.

The Cougars will be back in action Sunday, December 3 at 1 p.m. hosting Stetson at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago.

1st Half - Delaware State 40, Chicago State 31 
-Delaware State jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Cougars got on the board with a Jahsean Corbett layup
-Following a Hornets score, Deshawn Jean-Charles made a pair of free throws to cut the margin to two, 6-4, at the 15:43 mark
-At the point Delaware State went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to extend the lead to 13, 17-4, with 12:43 remaining until half
-The Cougars countered with a a trio of three pointers, one by Brent Davis, one by Jean-Charles and another by Wesley Cardet for a 9-0 run over the next two and a half minutes and the Hornets lead was just four, 17-13
-The run continued with a pair of Noble Crawford free throws to cut the lead to two, 17-15, before Delaware State scored back-to-back hoops to back up six, 21-15, at the 8:20 mark
-Corbett drained a free throw and the Hornets answered with back-to-back hoops to extend the lead to nine, 25-16, at the 6:44 mark
-A.J. Neal hit a three for the Cougars to start a 9-0 run with additional hoops by Davis and Cardet and a pair of Jean-Charles free throws and the game was tied 25-25 with 4:36 remaining in the half
-The Hornets stopped the run with a pair of free throws and CSU answered a Davis free throw and Corbett layup which gave the Cougars their first lead of the game, 28-27, at the 3:36 mark
-Delaware State answered on their next possession with an and-1 followed by a pair of free throws and layup and a 7-0 run and the Hornets went back up six, 34-28, at the 2:25 mark
-Davis cut the lead in half with a three but Delaware State closed the half with a 6-0 run to lead by nine at the half, 40-31 

2nd Half - Chicago State 38, Delaware State 36
-The Hornets opened the second-half scoring with a layup to extend the lead to 11, 42-31
-Cardet opened the scoring for the Cougars with a three and, following a Delaware State score, Green converted a three to cut the margin to seven, 44-37, at the 17:56 mark
-Delaware State pushed the lead to 12, 49-37, with a three and a hook shot and CSU countered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to five, 49-44, with 13:35 remaining in regulation
-The Hornets responded with a 6-0 run to push the lead back to 11, 55-44
-The next three Cougars points came from the charity stripe off the hands of Jean-Charles and Cardet and, following a Hornets free throw, Tristan Arneaud hit a three and the Delaware State was six, 56-50
-Following a Hornets bucket, Davis made three Cougars free throws and CSU was within five, 58-53, with 8:58 remaining in regulation
-The teams exchanged a pair of free throws and a Hornets layup put the Hornets up seven, 62-55
-Davis made a layup then the Hornets went on a 9-0 run to push the lead back to double digits, 14 points at 71-57, with 5:17 remaining
-The Cougars managed to get within six, 74-68, with 0:43 remaining but the Hornets made a pair of free throws and closed out the nine-point win
