Box Score Chicago State had five players score in double figures on Wednesday and rode a 27-7 advantage in made free throws to move past Morgan State to win the Mayan Division third-place game at the Men's Cancun Challenge.
The Cougars (2-5) had an 81-74 lead with 2:14 left in the second half before the Bears (2-5) made a final push with Amahrie Simpkins hitting two free throws to make it 81-78 with 52 seconds remaining. Chicago State missed two free throws at :41, and Wynston Tabbs made a layup to pull MSU to 81-80 with 31 seconds to go.
Wesley Cardet converted a shot for Chicago State to make it 83-80, and Tabbs tied it at 83-all with a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to go. The final lead was secured by the Cougars with a free throw from
Noble Crawford.
Jahsean Corbett had 18 points for CSU; Cardet had 15 points,
Brent Davis added 14 points, Crawford scored 12 points and
Kedrick Green scored 11 points.Â
Tabbs rang up 23 points for Morgan State. Simpkins scored 22 points and Kamron Hobbs had 11 points.
The next action for the Cougars will be a home game next Saturday, November 25 against UT-Martin at 2 p.m. at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago.
