Box Score Wesley Cardet led three Chicago State players in double figures with 15 points as the Cougars dropped the on-campus game of the Cancun Challenge to Southern Illinois 71-55 Thursday night at the Banterra Center in Carbondale, Illinois.
Jahsean Corbett scored 13 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while
Brent Davis rounded out the CSU players in double-digit scoring with 11.
The Cougars will be back in action Tuesday, November 21 at 2 p.m., taking on the University of Northern Colorado at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Cancun, Mexico as part of the Cancun Challenge. Depending on Tuesday's result, the Cougars will play either Morgan State or Radford on Wednesday, November 22.
1st Half - Southern Illinois 31, Chicago State 22
-SIU opened the scoring on the first possession of the game and went up 5-0 on a three on their next possession
-Chicago State's first points came via the charity stripe from Wesley Cardet to stop the run and it was 5-2 at the 17:36 mark
-The Salukis converted a layup then both teams struggled from the field as the Cougars made their first field goal just six minutes into the game, a driving layup by
Brent Davis and CSU, despite the early struggles, were down just three, 7-4, at the 13:49 mark
-Following a
Jahsean Corbett free throw, SIU knocked down a pair of free throws before the Cougars went on a 5-0 run on a Davis jumper and free throw and Kedrixk Green layup and the Cougars had their first lead of the game, 10-9, with 10:29 remaining until the half
-At that point, the Salukis put together a 12-2 run with the only CSU points coming on a jumper by Davis and SIU led 21-12 at the 6:10 mark
-Corbett stopped the run with a free throw before SIU went on another run, this one 8-2, hitting five of their last six shots, to go up 14 points, 29-15
-CSU put together a modest 7-0 run on a Corbett free throw and layup, a layup by Davis and a thunderous dunk at the buzzer by
Noble Crawford to cut the gap to nine, 31-22, at the half
2nd Half - Southern Illinois 40, Chicago State 33
-The Salukis converted an And-1 to begin the second half and the Cougars answered with a quick 5-0 run on a Green three and driving layup by Crawford and SIU led by seven, 34-27
-SIU answered with back-to-back threes to extend the lead to 13, 40-27, with 17:14 remaining to play
-Chicago State then went on a 5-0 run courtesy of Cardet with a pullup jumper, free throw and dunk to cut the margin to eight, 40-32
-The Cougars cut the lead to six at the 15:02 mark with Cardet converting a layup and free throw
-At that point the Salukis went on a 12-0 run to balloon the margin to 18, 53-35, at the 8:46 mark

Brent Davis stopped the run with a jumper and Cardet tacked on two free throws and, following an SIU score, Cardet scored again and the margin was 14, 55-41
-The Cougars wouldn't get closer than 13 points the rest of the way as SIU won by 16, 71-55
