Wesley Cardet Scores 21 in 74-64 Home Loss to Cal State Northridge

The Chicago State men's basketball team dropped a 74-64 decision to Cal State Northridge Tuesday night at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The Cougars held a four-point halftime lead but the Matadors used two second half runs to go up 11 with 9:27 left to play and the Cougars pulled within four points on two occasions and had opportunities to to get with two but another late CSUN left CSU playing catch up. Chicago State won the turnover battle forcing 12 to CSUN's seven, but the Matadors had a 43-29 edge on the boards, limiting the Cougars second-chance points.

Chicago State had two players in double figures led by Wesley Cardet who had 21 points and Jahsean Corbett added 11 to go with a team-high eight rebounds and a team-high three assists.

The Cougars will be back in action Thursday, November 16, in an on-campus game as part of the Cancun Challenge, traveling to Carbondale, Illinois to face Southern Illinois at the Banterra Center at 7 p.m. 

1st Half - Chicago State 35, Cal State Northridge 31
-CSUN opened the scoring with a driving layup and CSU countered on their end with Wesley Cardet hitting a jumper 
-The Matadors scored on their next possession and, again, the Cougars answered, this time on a Kedrick Green three for a 5-4 CSU advantage
-Following a CSU score, the Cougars put together a modest 5-0 run on a Cardet layup and another Green three and the Cougars led 10-6
-The teams exchanged free throws before the Matadors went on a 9-0 run to take a 16-12 lead
-Cardet stopped the run with a three and, following a CSUN bucket, Brent Davis knocked down a three to knot the game at 18-18
-At that point CSUN went on another run, this time 7-0, to jump out 25-18
-The Cougars scored the next four on a Corbett layup and two Davis free throws to pull within three, 25-22
-The teams exchanged free throws then the Matadors hit a three to extend the lead to six, 29-23 with 4:55 remaining in the half
-The Cougars, who hadn't scored from the field since the 7:26 mark, followed two free throws with a Corbett layup to stop a five minute drought and the CSUN lead was just two, 29-27
-The Matadors put back an offensive rebound at the 2:09 mark to extend the lead to four but failed to score for the remainder of the half and the Cougars took advantage with an 8-0 run, six by Cardet and a layup by Deshawn Jean-Charles and Chicago State led 35-31 at the half

2nd Half - Cal State Northridge 74, Chicago State 29
-CSUN came out of the locker room after halftime and went on a 6-0 run to turn a four-point deficit into a two-point lead, 37-35
-Cardet stopped the run with a layup and the game was tied for the sixth time, 37-37
-The Matadors made a layup and free throw on separate possessions to go back up three before Jean-Charles an Jahsean Corbett each hit layups and the Cougars regained the lead 41-40
-The teams exchanged baskets before CSUN went on a 8-2 run to go up 52-45
-A.J. Neal hit a three and the Cougars were within five before the Mastodons went on a 7-0 run and CSUN had the largest lead of the game for either team, 11 points, 59-48
-The Cougars then went on a 7-0 run on a Corbett free throw, a Noble Crawford dunk, a driving layup by Corbett and a Davis dunk and the CSUN lead was cut to four, 59-55, with 6:37 remaining in regulation 
-CSUN then scored six of the next eight, the lone CSU points coming on a Corbett jumper and the Matadors led by eight, 65-57, with 3:42 to play
-Following a CSUN hoop that extended the score back to 10, Cardet hit a jumper and Crawford a free throw and the lead was seven, 67-60, at the 1:35 mark
-The Matadors extended the lead with a layup and free throw to go back up 10, 70-60 with 0:36 left to play and made their free throws down the stretch to earn a 74-64 victory
