The Chicago State men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season, 78-67, over Southern Indiana Sunday afternoon at Screaming Eagles Arena in Evansville, Indiana. The Cougars overcame a slow start, missing their first three point attempts before Southern Indiana even had their first offensive possession and were down three following three Screaming Eagles free throws. The Cougars settled in and led by as many as 25 in the first 20 minutes, limiting their turnovers to three compared to 13 for Southern Indiana. Chicago State also hit 44 percent from the field including 41 percent from beyond the three-point arc to lead by 19 at the half. The Screaming Eagles made a run in the second half, chopping the lead down to 10 with 10 minutes remaining but the Cougars sustained the surge and pulled out their first win of the season.
Chicago State had four players in double figures led by Wesley Cardet who had 23 points while
Jahsean Corbett added 18,
Brent Davis with 16 and
Kedrick Green with 10.
Deshawn Jean-Charles led the Cougars in rebounds with seven and Green dished out a game high eight assists.
1st Half - Chicago State 41, Southern Indiana 22
-The Cougars had looks at three three point attempts on their first possession but failed to connect and Southern Indiana finally gained possession, was fouled and hit three free throws for the early lead
-Chicago State then went on a 10-0 run on threes by
Brent Davis,
Jahsean Corbett and free throws by Corbett and
Deshawn Jean-Charles along with a Corbett layup to lead 10-3
-The Screaming Eagles stopped the run with a layup and CSU responded with a 13-3 run with Cardet scoring four points, Davis hit another three, Corbett another two and
Kedrick Green capped the run with a pair of layups and CSU led 23-8
-Cardet scored the next seven Cougars points and CSU extended the lead to 30-13

Deshawn Jean-Charles got into the scoring column with a three and Cardet added a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 35-15
-The Cougars went on a 6-1 run and led 41-16 with 1:27 remaining in the first half
-USI closed the half with a pair of threes to cut the margin to 41-22 at the halftime break
2nd Half - Southern Indiana 45, Chicago State 37
-USI opened the second half scoring with a layup and extended their first half 6-0 run to 8-0 and cut the lead to 41-24
-Cardet stopped the run on the Cougars first possession of the second half, scoring his 17th point of the game on a jumper
-Davis extended the modest run with a layup and Corbett hit a pair of free throws and the lead was 47-24 with 18:19 remaining
-The teams exchanged buckets, the Cougars deuce coming on a Davis dunk and it was 49-26 at the 16:49 mark
-Southern Indiana hit a three, Corbett hit a free throw and the Screaming Eagles converted a layup and two free throws to cut the margin to 50-33 at the 13:46 mark

A.J. Neal knocked down a three for the Cougars and following a USI score, Neal hit a jumper and the lead was 20, 55-35
-Chicago State then hit a scoring drought and the Screaming Eagles took advantage with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 10, 55-45, with 10 minutes remaining to play
-Cardet stopped the run, converting a free throw, and the lead was 11 at the 8:37 mark then Corbett converted a three with the shot clock about to expire and CSU extended the margin to 14, 59-45, with 7:53 left in regulation

Brent Davis converted a layup and USI answered with a score and a pair of free throw to cut the gap to 61-49 with 5:35 remaining
-The Cougars countered with a pair of buckets, one on a driving layup by
Kedrick Green and another by Cardet and the lead was back up to 16, 65-49, with 3:48 left in regulation
-USI converted a pair of free throws, Davis hit a layup and USI answered with a layup of their own and free throw and the lead was 12, 67-55
-The Screaming Eagles went on a modest 5-0 run with three made free throws and a dunk off a steal and the margin was just seven with 1:17 left to play

Kedrick Green hit a pair of free throws followed by a pair by
Brent Davis and the lead was back to 11, 71-60, at the 0:56 mark
-The teams exchanged buckets the rest of the way and the Cougars earned their first win of the season, 78-67

The Cougars will be back in action Tuesday, November 14, at home as part of a men's/women's doubleheader, hosting Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m., following the CSU women who will host Ball State at 5 p.m.
