Brent Davis Hits Game Winner For Cougars in 76-75 Win Over The Citadel

Game Featured 19 Lead Changes and Six Ties

In a game which featured 19 lead changes and six ties, Chicago State converted on the last possession of the game as Brent Davis hit a runner in the lane with time expiring to give Chicago State the lead and the win, 76-75, over The Citadel Monday night at McAlister Field House in Charleston, South Carolina. Davis, who finished the night with eight points, played his first two collegiate seasons for the Bulldogs and knocked down the basket to defeat his old team.

Chicago State led by as many as 14 points in the first half but a 15-3 Bulldogs run made this game a back-and-forth affair with many of the 19 lead changes coming in the second half. There were five lead changes in the final three minutes, with each team converting on the offensive end to reclaim  the lead on consecutive possessions. The Citadel went up 73-72 and scored following a CSU turnover which led to a Bulldogs layup to extend the lead to three, 75-72, with just 59 seconds remaining. Jahsean Corbett then scored to cut the lead to one, 75-74, with 39 ticks left on the clock. The Citadel's Madison Durr attempted to put the game away for the Bulldogs with a long three but missed, and Corbett came down with the rebound with seven seconds left, leading to Davis' game-winning shot.

Four Cougars scored in double figures led by Wesley Cardet's 21 points, while Jahsean Corbett had 18, Bryce Johnson 15 and Elijah Weaver contributed 14 in a game where only the Cougars starters accounted for all the team's scoring with no points coming from the bench. Chicago State out rebounded the Bulldogs 36-25 with Corbett accounting for 13 boards as he recorded his team-leading eighth double-double of the season.

The next action for Chicago State's men's basketball team will be Saturday, February 4 at 1 p.m. against the Hartford Hawks at Chase Arena in West Hartford, Connecticut. The Hawks, the only other Division I men's basketball program this season, enters the contest with a 5-17 record and are coming off a 73-56 win over Stonehill College. The two schools have never faced each other on the basketball court and this matchup will be the first of two this season, with Chicago State hosting the Hawks on Sunday, February 19 at the JCC.

1st Half - Chicago State 44, The Citadel 34
The Cougars led by as many as 14 during the first half, out rebounding the Bulldogs 19-10 while shooting 55 percent from the field
The Citadel opened the scoring with an early two but CSU responded with a Bryce Johnson and and the Cougars first lead
The Bulldogs converted a layup and Johnson made a pair of free throws and had all five of CSU's points
Back-to-back buckets by Jahsean Corbett and Wesley Cardet expanded the lead to 9-4 at the 16:21 mark
The Citadel tied the game at 9-9 on a converted jumper and three pointer at the 14:03 mark
Brent Davis hit a three for the Cougars as the teams continued to exchange baskets
Chicago State trailed 15-14 when Bryce Johnson hit a three followed by a Elijah Weaver bucket and Jahsean Corbett three for a quick 8-0 run and a 22-15 CSU lead
The Bulldogs hit a three before the teams exchanged a pair of free throws and CSU led 24-20 at the 7:25 mark
A modest 5-1 run put CSU up 29-21 with 6:25 left in the first half
The teams continued to trade baskets until, with the Cougars leading 33-28, CSU went on a 9-0 run and led by 14, the largest lead by either team, and led 42-28 with 1:23 remaining in the half
The Bulldogs outscored CSU 6-2 in the final minute and the Cougars went into the locker room at halftime leading by 10, 44-34

2nd Half - The Citadel 41, Chicago State 32
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the second half and the teams exchanged baskets with CSU going up 12 on two occasions, leading 50-38 with 18:17 remaining in regulation
At that point, the Bulldogs began chipping away at the lead with a 15-3 run to go from down 12 to up one at 54-53 at the 11:11 mark

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team won the 2011 Great West regular season and tournament championship and earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational. The CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
