Cougars Women’s Basketball Wins Again at Hartford, 57-49

Janiah Newell Leads All Players with 22 Points

The Chicago State women's basketball team won their second game in as many days at Hartford, this time by a score of 57-49 Sunday afternoon at Chase Family Arena in West, Hartford, Connecticut. On Saturday, the same two teams squared off with the Cougars earning a 76-59 victory. The Hawks led throughout the game and took a 10 point lead into the locker room at halftime and led by nine in the late stages of the third quarter before the Janiah Newell staged a 7-2 run for CSU in the final minute to cut the lead to four. Ana Haklicka hit a three to open the scoring in the fourth to pull within one and Newell converted a pair of free throws and CSU took the lead and never trailed again en route to the eight-point win.

Newell led all scorers with 22 points and Taylor Norris was the only other player in double figures with 10. Chicago State won the battle of the boards, collecting 47 rebounds to Hartford's 40. Josie Hill led the Cougars with 11 rebounds and Haklicka added nine.

The next action for the Cougars will be back home against Saint Xavier University on Sunday, February 5 at 1 p.m. at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. Saint Xavier competes in the CCAC and are 16-6 overall and 12-3 in conference play. 

1st Quarter - Hartford 12, Chicago State 9
Taylor Norris opened the scoring in the game hitting a jumper at the 19:02 mark
Hartford hit a three to take an early lead and build on that lead through the first half
The Hawks went on a 7-3 run and led 10-5 at the 4:14 mark
Both teams went through a scoring drought until Josie Hill scored at the 1:47 mark and CSU trailed 10-7
Hartford scored and Taylor Norris made a couple free throws and the Hawks led 12-9 after one quarter

2nd Quarter - Hartford 17, Chicago State 10
Hartford opened the scoring in the second with a three to go up six, 15-9
Taylor Norris scored on back-to-back possessions and pulled CSU to within two, 15-13
Following a Hartford made free throw, Yzabelle Laualoga Tevao scored and the score was 16-15 Hartford at the 6:01 mark
Hartford created some breathing room with a 9-0 run and led 25-15 at the 2:48 mark
Janiah Newell snapped a CSU scoring drought of just over 4:30 to cut the lead to eight, 25-17, with 1:23 remaining
Hartford outscored CSU 4-2 in the final minute and led 29-19 at the half

3rd Quarter - Chicago State 18, Hartford 12
Taylor Norris opened the scoring in the third quarter but Hartford hit back-to-back threes and had their largest lead of the game, 14 points, 35-21 at the 8:53 mark
The teams exchanged hoops when Tae'lor Willard hit a three followed by a Haklicka layup and free throw and the lead was eight, 37-29
The next three points came at the free throw line, two for Hartford and one for CSU and it was 39-30 with 2:51 remaining
The Cougars staged a 7-2 run in the final minute, all coming at the hands of Newell, to cut the lead to four, 41-37, going into the fourth

4th Quarter - Chicago State 20, Hartford 8
Ana Haklicka hit a three to open the fourth-quarter scoring and the lead was just one for Hartford, 41-40
Laura Segues hit a three following a pair of Hartford free throws and the game was tied, 43-43, at the 8:01 mark
The Hawks converted another pair of free throws and Newell responded with a jumper to tie the game 45-45
Newell then converted a pair of free throws and CSU regained the lead since the opening minutes and wouldn't trail again, outscoring Hartford 10-4 the rest of the way for the eight-point win.

About Chicago State

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team won the 2011 Great West regular season and tournament championship and earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational. The CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
