Volleyball Falls to UIC, 3-1

Feliz dominates but Cougars drop final two sets

Chicago, IL - The Chicago State volleyball team faced off against the UIC Flames in their last match of the Windy City Invitational and lost three sets to one.

Feliz hammered home an outstanding 20 kills which was a game-high, along with Berenice Almeyda adding 7 of her own and both Whitney Barnes and Mesalina Severino with 6.

Set One: UIC: 25, Chicago State: 20

  • The Flames kicked it off with a 2-0 run
  • The Cougars countered with a 4-2 run to tie it all up at 4-4
  • Chicago State next went on a 5-0 run featuring kills by Whitney Barnes and Julieta Sandez to lead 11-9
  • Battled it out to a 19-19 tie
  • UIC suddenly broke out with a 6-1 run and finished off the Cougars at 25-20

Set Two: Chicago State: 25, UIC 15

  • Chicago State came out hot with a 3-1 early lead featuring a kill by Feliz and a service ace by Julieta Sandez
  • This trend continued as the Cougars completely dominated the Flames
  • The Cougars highest rally came at 7-0 which featured a service ace by Yunju Lee and kills by Sandez, Feliz, and Barnes
  • Chicago State took the set win with a stunning 10 point lead at 25-15

Set Three: UIC: 25, Chicago State: 16

  • The Flames came out with a 3-0 rally
  • The Cougars then answered back with a 4-1 run which once again featured kills by Barnes and Feliz
  • It was a complete opposite trend of play from set two as the Flames dominated the Cougars
  • UIC ended the set with a 7-1 run at 25-16

Set Four: UIC 25, Chicago State 21

  • The Flames jumped out to yet another 3-0 lead
  • This 3-0 run turned into a 6-2 stunning lead for the Flames, forcing the Cougars to a timeout
  • Chicago State attempted several times to rally back with their highest run at 5-1 which featured kills by Feliz and Severino
  • The Flames ultimately defeated the Cougars and took the set win at 25-21 and there match at 3-1

The Cougars next face off against the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Sioux Falls, SD.

About Chicago State

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
