Volleyball Sweeps Oakland 3-0

EAST LANSING, MI - The Chicago State volleyball team faced off against the Oakland Grizzlies and won with a 3-0 sweep.

Yanlis Feliz, Berenice Almeyda, and Whitney Barnes all produced twelve kills each.

Set One - Chicago State: 25, Oakland: 19

  • Oakland earned the first point due to a service error from the Cougars
  • However, the Cougars quickly bounced back with a 3-1 run featuring kills from Almeyda, Sandez, and Severino to lead 3-2
  • Back-and-forth scoring ensued which lead to a 9-9 tie
  • The Cougars then edged the Grizzlies with a 4-1 run due to three attack errors by Oakland and a kill from Barnes
  • Chicago State maintained this momentum and ultimately took the set win with a stunning kill from Severino

Set Two - Chicago State: 29, Oakland: 27

  • The Cougars began with a 2-0 run with two amazing kills from Julieta Sandez
  • Nonetheless, the Grizzlies did not shy away and quickly tied up the game at 3-3
  • At this point, Feliz converted a kill which regained the lead for the Cougars at 4-3
  • Unfortunately, the Grizzlies once again tied it up and this trend of played continued which led to 25-25 score
  • It wasn't until a 27-27 score that the Cougars finally managed to pull away thanks to a kill from Barnes and an attacking error from Oakland to win the set

Set Three - Chicago State: 25, Oakland: 19

  • The set began much like the previous ones which led to a 5-5 tie
  • The Cougars then edged the Grizzlies with a 6-1 run featuring kills from Feliz and Barnes to lead 11-6
  • The Grizzlies attempted to retaliate but were unsuccesful
  • In the end, two consecutive attacking errors gifted the Cougars the set win and match at 25-19

The Cougars next face the University at Albany on September 25th in Albany, NY at 1 P.M.

About Chicago State

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
